Review - The North Face Boys and Girls Resolve Jacket
Friday, 12 July 2013 | Alan - Escape 2
With the summer holidays just around the corner and some exciting camping adventures planned, I'm thinking about what clothing will be on our packing list. The weather is gloriously beautiful at the moment, so it looks like waterproofs probably won't be needed, but you never know...
It seems a little silly therefore to have waterproof jackets on the list, but indeed I will no matter what the forecast. When you have something as lightweight and packable as The North Face Resolve Jacket, it would be silly not too. Just in case of an unexpected thundery shower or if the evenings are a little on the chilly side and the dew comes down, then there will be a jacket stuffed into the corner of a Base Camp Duffel to pull-out.

The North Face Resolve Jacket is a really lightweight and completely waterproof jacket. It is made from The North Face's own HyVent® fabric which works really well, keeping water out while being comfortably breathable. The seams are properly taped and the construction is 100% waterproof. This is very unusual with coats purchased on the highstreet and is where the extra cost comes in. But it does mean that no matter how much it chucks it down, you and your child will be dry and comfortable beneath. The other issue with cheaper coats being even though the fabric may be waterproof, it is hardly, if at all breathable. This means that if it's a warm day or you are doing anything active that generates warmth, then water vapor can't escape to the outside, and you will get increasingly clammy and damp on the inside.

If, or should I say when your The North Face Resolve Jacket needs a wash, then just pop it in the machine. Ideally use a product like Nikwax Tech Wash, that is specially formulated to clean waterproof fabric, or something gentle like soap flakes. Make sure that you do up any Velcro tabs first. Wash on a synthetic cycle at 30 degrees. It can then be tumble dried on a low setting. Don't be afraid of doing this as it will actually improve the performance of the fabric by smoothing out the outer face fabric. This action helps rain/water droplets to form 'beads' and roll-off. By making sure that there is not excess water 'stuck' on the fabric outer, the breathability will be maintained.

The only thing I think I would change, would be the elasticated cuffs. Personally I prefer a Velcro adjustment tab. Having said that the elastic works, and it keep the sleeve where it should be.
It is great that The North Face do specific colour options for Boy's & Girl's, but perhaps it would be better if they didn't label them as such. Maybe siblings won't want to wear the wrong gender's coat? As we only have the girl variety, this won't be an issue here and I could be completely wrong anyway!
