Synthetic travel clothing
What is it and how does it work?
Modern synthetic fibers and finishing treatments have enabled manufacturers to produce
clothing that offers many advantages over traditional cotton clothing for adventurous
travelers and outdoor use. These new fabrics are very comfortable to wear next to the skin
(unlike the nylon shirts of old), even in very hot conditions. This is due to the fabric's
high breathability and the special wicking treatments used on them, which help to move
moisture away from the skin.
What are its benefits?
Dries quickly for safety, comfort and convenience (when washing by hand, for example).
More durable.
Less weight and bulk.
Does not shrink, stretch or fade.
Crease resistant and easy care.
Some fabrics offer increased sun protection (SPF), anti-bacterial properties*, or insect repellant treatments*
Some garments have integrated ventilation features that allow cooling air flow in hot conditions.
(*Available spring 2002)
What are its drawbacks?
Will melt if exposed to sparks from fires, hot stove parts, etc.
More expensive than cotton.
