eVENT Fabric

What is it and how does it work?
eVENT is a top-quality waterproof and breathable fabric, made using similar materials and construction to market leading Gore-Tex. It consists of a microporous membrane laminated to a durable outer 'face' fabric (in the case of 2-layer construction), or laminated between a durable outer face fabric and a protective 'scrim' lining fabric (in the case of 3-layer construction). Like Gore-Tex, it utilises high performance ePTFE (expanded Polytetrafluoroethylene) to create the waterproof and breathable membrane, but it does not have the same secondary oleophobic (oil-repellent) layer as Gore-Tex. Instead, it leaves the pores in the membrane open, allowing unhindered transmission of moisture vapour (a feature they market as 'Direct Venting'), and render the membrane oil-repellent via a different method to protect it from contamination.

What are it's benefits?

An excellent level of breathability (claimed to be much higher than Gore-Tex XCR).
Very durably waterproof.
Lower price than Gore-Tex XCR.

What are their drawbacks?

Due to it's more open structure, it is not as absolutely windproof as Gore-Tex. This can make eVENT garments feel colder than Gore-Tex or similar garments in windy conditions - extra insulation layers may need to be used.
The manufacturers of Gore-Tex claim that eVENT's 'open' membrane structure is still open to contamination (from things like body oils, sunscreen, etc), which can cause leaking by allowing moisture to (in effect) wick through the membrane. Early versions of Gore-Tex had this open structure and were abandoned because of problems with contamination and windproofness.
