OS maps on CD
What is it and how does it work?
Ordnance Survey Landranger (1:50,000) maps are now available on CR-ROM, as part
of two different route-planning software products. Both these products allow you
to view and print the map data at different scales, and to plan routes
on-screen. Various degrees of upload and/or download of data is possible to
certain GPS receivers.
What are its benefits?
Maps can be printed at any scale or size convenient for a particular walk or cycle ride.
The maps are 'seamless' - you can always have the area you want in the centre of the map.
Waypoints and routes can be very quickly created on screen with the click of a mouse. These can be printed, saved for future use or emailed to other people.
Information such as distance travelled, estimated time, height ascended, and height profile can be viewed for a route.
Routes can be uploaded to compatible GPS receivers, which is far quicker than manually entering grid references.
If you want mapping of many different areas, it does work out very cost effective (to get the entire Landranger map series covering the whole of Great Britain (204 maps) costs £1221.96 - on CD they cost £240).
What are its drawbacks?
What does it cost?
Anquet Maps The Lakes*, The Peaks*, Scotland*, The South Coast and Wales* CD's are
£34.95 each. Anquet Maps North and South Great Britain CD Packs (which together
cover the whole of the OS Landranger series) cost £120 each. Memory Map
Discoverer OS Edition divides the whole of Great Britain in 12 regions, costing
£59.95 each. *Products we stock - others are available to order.
